Food Intolerance Testing

Why choose the First Step Food Intolerance Test for €30?

When you need to know if your IBS, migraines, Eczema or other health concern may be triggered by what you eat then you'll find the First Step Food Intolerance Test the ideal solution. This test will give you a simple Positive / Negative result enabling you to know whether food may be the trigger behind your symptoms.

A study conducted by Allergy UK suggests that up to 45% of the UK population is affected by food intolerance or sensitivity. Often described as ‘delayed onset allergies’, food intolerances differ from classical allergies in that there is usually a delay in the reaction.  This can take effect from a matter of hours to a few days after eating the offending foods, making the true culprits very difficult to identify.

The YORKTEST Service – The 5 Easy Ways to Find Your Problem Foods:

STEP 1. Once you place your order, a blood collection kit is sent to you in the post

STEP 2. Using the sterile lancet in the kit, you take a pin prick sample of blood and soak it up on the cotton wand and place it in the small vial.  Then you put it back in the box and post it back to the labs in the pre-paid envelope provided.

STEP 3. When your sample is received back at the laboratory, it is extracted from the wand using  dilutent and one of the qualified lab technicians will test the sample using one of the foodSCAN Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) tests

STEP 4. We will send your results out using our easy to understand traffic light system – the foods in the green section are all okay to eat freely, the foods listed in the yellow section should only be eaten every 4-5 days, and the foods in the red section are those you should avoid

STEP 5. To accompany your results, there is a comprehensive information pack, including a 12-week food diary, a booklet containing some tips on how to keep motivated and our  Guidebook that details the foods families, and vitamin and mineral information.  You are also entitled to two consultations with one of the nutritional therapists.

Homocysteine Testing:

Research suggests that high levels of homocysteine in the blood is a contributory factor in heart disease, strokes and thrombosis amongst other diseases and experts are hailing it a better predictor of potential health problems than cholesterol.

The YORKTEST Homocysteine test allows you to easily check your levels of homocysteine using our unique plasma separator device, which was developed in-house by our research scientists.

"Your homocysteine is your most vital health statistic - more important than your weight or blood. It literally tells you where you are on the scale of health and whether you are doing enough to keep yourself in tip-top condition."

Patrick Holford, author and founder of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition.

Testing Procedure:

The plasma separator device was created and developed in-house by our Senior Research Chemist for ease of use.  When your sample arrives at the laboratory, it is firstly checked to determine if has been carried out correctly and if it is a sufficient sample.

The sample disc is removed from the main card device, and liquid is added to saturate or rehydrate the sample – this process removes the sample from the disc itself.

The next chemical added ‘frees’ the homocysteine from the protein in the blood sample.  This means that any waste material is washed away and a clean homocysteine sample, ready for testing, is left.

The sample is then assessed on the HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography) equipment.

The final result is calculated using reference standard preparations.  The specialised software computes the information to determine your ‘H-Score’ (homocysteine results).

YORKTEST recommend that you carry out this test first thing on a Monday morning as the sample needs to be in the laboratory within 7 days.  The Homocysteine test is an overnight fasting sample.

Multi Allergy Screening Test (MAST):

To be able to perform the Multi-Allergy Screening Test (MAST), we require a 5ml venous blood sample that you will need to have a GP, Nurse or Healthcare Professional take for you.  The sample also needs to be back in the Laboratory within 48 hours.

You then need to courier the sample back to us on the same day to ensure that we receive it the next day otherwise the sample will go off.  Place your sample back into the red plastic box, along with the completed Client Detail form and returned to YORKTEST in the plastic pre-paid envelope provided.  Upon receipt, the sample is booked in and assigned a unique test reference number.

The returned sample tube is then placed in centrifuge - this separates the serum (which is required to run the test) from the other blood components (not required).  The serum is removed from the tube and placed in a small labelled plastic vial.  This is now ready to be tested.

Testing Procedure

The test chamber is filled with serum.  It is then incubated for 16-24 hours (overnight), thus allowing the IgE antibodies in the serum to bind to the allergen coated threads in the test chamber.

The test chamber is then washed with to remove to any unbound serum components.  After that, it is filled with a solution that will bind to any already bound IgE antibodies and allowed to incubate.  The washing process is repeated to finally get rid of any remaining unbound components.

A second solution is then added to the test chamber which reacts and produces light emission and is allowed to incubate.  The test chamber is placed in a machine which reads the amount of light emitted, and produces a printout.  The amount of light emitted is directly proportional to the amount of allergen specific IgE.   The printout from the machine is converted into your results.
